Second week of college had set in and we were not yet really
interacting with fellow classmates. There was this awkwardness present while we
sat together during class. This awkwardness was broken with a ice breaking
exercise hosted by one of our lecturers. It was a much better way of making new
people interact and mingle with each other, other than just introducing
yourself and saying a few things about yourself which might not be that
successful because people hesitate to share much about themselves in there
first meeting. We were allotted in groups of five and were given a set of three
phrases that were based on a thing or an action. Each member had to select one
out of the three elements and brainstorm on the selected phrase.
During this process we started interacting with fellow group
mates. We started exchanging ideas, views and suggestions. This helped us open
up our selves to our group mates and started interacting more openly. After we
were done with our exercise we had to portray our work to the rest of the
class. This is when we got to know each one better and started expressing
ourselves better.
Ice breaking exercises indeed ‘break the ice’ and is the
most effective way for new people to gel and get to know each other better. It’s
a interactive as well as fun exercise that helps people get to know each other
better and also helps in team building. By getting to know each other and
learning about new objectives of the exercise , people become more engaged in
the proceedings and so contribute more effectively towards a successful outcome.
It was a great experience on the whole and I was glad to be part of it.
